Chrome Users are the Latest Victims in Google’s battle with Apple

Google announced this week that it would be removing support from its H.264 video codec in its popular Chrome browser. If web developers specifically use the latest HTML5 video tag, they will no longer be able to point to the video encoded in the H.264 (AVC) standard format that is used by Chrome users. All the Android users will not be left far behind. The reason is to allow Google to devote more resources in supporting open codec technologies like Theora and WebM. It has also been suggested that this move will help Google save more money by not encoding and storing YouTube videos in this H.264 format. However, this is not really the case, as the H.264 is only format that is allowed on Apple devices like the iPad and iPhone. If YouTube should become incompatible with any of these devices, then it would probably be replaced by other competitors that are more flexible. Also, H.264 is a superior format in terms of user experiences as well as technically. There are fewer hitchers, less bl...

Google’s Chrome browser has reportedly neared 10 percent in market shares towards the end of December, 2010. This is a significant increase from a market share of 4.6 just a year ago. Google Chrome OS’ Debut Most Likely to Happen Next Year

Chrome OS, the most anticipated new operating system from Google may not get launched until next year. Although the consumer launch is most likely to happen next year, Google yet has to bring out their branded ‘Speedbooks’ running the new system. Google has been planning for this launch for two years making it quite uncomfortable for both Apple and Microsoft. The Chrome OS was positioned initially to capitalize on the network revolution. However, it seems to be overtaken by events. Apple on the other hand hasn’t been manufacturing enough since the time they launched iPad and they see these devices as a future frontier for media consumption. Now, why is Google aiming for two mobile operating systems? It has emerged that Google has joined hands with the US telecom leader Verizon as an effort to launch their own iPad killer device which will be based on the Android operating system. Still, we are confused as to why would Google want to have two ultra portable operating systems for tablets...

Google Chrome to Phone

Now Chrome to phone is a must have for phones running Android 2.2 ("Froyo"). The utility allows anyone to send a Webpage from Chrome browser directly to a phone and have it opened by using an appropriate application. Like sending directions from Google Map by using Maps app and a standard web page will open in the Android web browser. This is a great way you can use to share information between a computer and a mobile device. To clip text from the web page, you can simply highlight the text and send it to your phone and it will be copied in the device clipboard. For dialing a number from a web page, highlight it and send it to the device and it will open the “phone” screen with the dialed number. You don’t need a maximum amount of set up. You only need to download the Chrome to Phone extension for Chrome on the desktop and it will ask you to log into the account used with your phone. You can do the same with the Chrome to your phone app on the phone and run it. The app doesn’...

Google Chrome Web Store gets ready to roll

Though Google has officially announced that they are going to open the Chrome Web Store later this year, it seems they are in a hurry to launch it sooner. They are taking the steps to get ready to launch sooner than they have announced. Developers can hook their applications up to the Google Checkout merchant accounts and there is also a way to preview how the application will look like in the store when it is live. Google had announced in August that the Chrome Web Store would be launched in October this year but all the pieces are fitting together sooner than expected. The placeholder space for applications in the Chromium pops in and out of existence but the Web Store will be fully functional as it is a portion of the Extension online area. Google has also put out a set of guidelines for what images the developers will need while uploading the application for display in the Chrome Web Store. There are also guidelines for icons, screen shots, header background and promotional images,...

New Version Of Google Chrome Due Soon

Google has always been after speed whether it’s for their search engine or browser. Now, they are speeding up another aspect of their browser. Their goal is to release a more stable version every six weeks, that will be twice as the existing speed is. Google is creating new features very quickly and they want their users to get them as soon as possible. Google will be able to have firmly set schedules for chrome from these fast iterations. Google is also putting their efforts to cut down the rapid iteration of versions that are coming: “Since we are going to continue to increment our major versions with every new release (i.e. 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0) those numbers will start to move a little faster than before. Please don’t read too much into the pace of version number changes – they just mean we are moving through release cycles and we are geared up to get fresher releases into your hands!” It’s a great thing to see how fast they will be will be iterating and if the version numbers didn’t...
