Google celebrates its Latest Android Release by adding a Honeycomb Sculpture in its Headquarters

Google fails to Mention Facebook

Google has recently announced that its latest search engine would integrate more with social media, and has done so without even mentioning Facebook in the entire blog post! This comes as a major contrast to Microsoft’s announcement of the current Bing browser.

This failing to mention Facebook on the part of Google comes as an irony to the previous claim made by Google about how its social search results are “comprehensive”. Of course the announcement did mention Twitter, YouTube and Flickr, but the announcement also kept using the sentence “and other sites” as a way to refer to and dismiss Facebook.

What’s more ironical it seems is Google’s assertion about how it has given users more control on how they connect accounts, and how they have made connecting accounts a lot more convenient. Unless the search giant has changed its mind about inoperability with Facebook, you should try importing your Gmail address onto the social networking site, or perhaps vice versa.

And as good a solution as this may be to root out low-quality websites; it can also have an unexpected side effect. It could lead to users indulging in highly biased opinions with regards to sites. This in turn transforms Google from an unbiased information retrieval platform to a personalized portal that shows you only the type of information that you want to see.

And this could be potentially dangerous as it undermines the biggest strength of the Internet - exposure to all sorts of ideas and information that you might never have known existed and that you may not agree with. One of the biggest benefits that the Internet has brought for us today is its vast cache of information, different views and its different opinions. Recently, J.C. Penney was caught in the middle of a highly manipulative search engine campaign, and Google definitely isn’t excited about this news.

Yes, Google has recently cracked down on what is considered to be one of the biggest search engine ranking frauds today. While such stories aren’t essentially rare, especially when we’re talking about spamming tactics, one would expect such stunts to come from smaller and lesser known companies. But the accused party in this case is none other than retail giant – J.C. Penney!

According to a recent article in the New York Times, people started getting very suspicious when it was revealed that J.C. Penney was the number 1 result for a wide variety of searches; including some searches that people wouldn’t even associate with the company! Since then, the Times requested Doug Pierce, the online search expert from Blue Fountain Media to help them understand how this could be possible, and the man came up with enough evidence to really upset Google with regards to this company.

Doug Pierce found that when he searched for the word “dresses”, there were more than 2,000 websites listed. However, most of these sites didn’t have anything to do with dresses at all! Instead, most of them had text links that linked back to J.C Penney; making them nothing but link farms!

The Times then contacted Google and informed them about this. Google clearly wasn’t very happy with this information, since it was a clear violation of the search engine’s advertising terms. What’s more, it was also found that J.C. Penney had also violated Google’s guidelines at least 3 times in the past. What followed next was Google taking some immediate and harsh actions. Many of J.C. Penney’s no.1 ranking results were pushed into oblivion in the same day.

Next time, you plan on deceiving Google and not following the guidelines in the ethical manner, you better think twice.

Is Google losing to Bing

In the latest reports released by Experian Hitwise, the world’s biggest search engine, Google, has apparently lost some of its global search engine market share to Bing in January of this year. With Bing going all out, can Google really lose out to Bing?

In the month of January of this year, it was observed that Google’s percent share had dropped down to 67.95 from 69.67 % in December of 2010. What’s more, it was also observed that Bing’s percent share rose to 12.81 from 10.6 in December, 2010.

In the overall scenario, the Bing-powered search engines right from Yahoo to Bing have jumped in popularity to a 27.44% in January of this year from a 25.77% last year.

Above all, it was noticed that the Bing-Yahoo search engine success rate was found to be higher. The success rate was chalked at 81 percent, whereas Google’s was marked at 65% only.

Google & Facebook in Takeover Talks with Twitter

There’s been a lot of talk doing its rounds with regards to the possible sale of Twitter. With such exceptional news reaching us today, many individuals involved in the talks have said that the sale could possibly be valued at $10 billion or more!

According to some “very reliable” reports, Google and Facebook have apparently sent out executives to engage in “low level” talks with Twitter. The discussions between the various parties have estimated the value of Twitter somewhere around $8 to $10 billion.

But until the matter has been finalized, it wouldn’t be prudent to get your hopes too high, because according to some sources, the talks are apparently not going to get anywhere anytime soon. Is it possible that Twitter feels that the $10 billion value is a little too low?

However, in the midst of all this, Twitter seems to be getting a lot of attention, which of course works in favor of its business. Recently, the company set an all-time record for the highest number of tweets recorded during a sporting event. During the last few minutes of the Super Bowl, Twitter recorded a staggering number of 4064 tweets in just a single second! Chrome Users are the Latest Victims in Google’s battle with Apple

Google announced this week that it would be removing support from its H.264 video codec in its popular Chrome browser. If web developers specifically use the latest HTML5 video tag, they will no longer be able to point to the video encoded in the H.264 (AVC) standard format that is used by Chrome users. All the Android users will not be left far behind. The reason is to allow Google to devote more resources in supporting open codec technologies like Theora and WebM.

It has also been suggested that this move will help Google save more money by not encoding and storing YouTube videos in this H.264 format. However, this is not really the case, as the H.264 is only format that is allowed on Apple devices like the iPad and iPhone. If YouTube should become incompatible with any of these devices, then it would probably be replaced by other competitors that are more flexible. Also, H.264 is a superior format in terms of user experiences as well as technically. There are fewer hitchers, less blockiness and lower CPU utilization.

However, Google has been said to take a stand in favor of open technologies on paper, when in fact they are not really in favor of it. WebM is not an open technology in the strictest sense because it uses patents that are own by the MPEG-LA group and its members. However, the patent holders are ignoring this for the time because it is not a big issue. This tactic has been used many times.

Another thing is if Google is seriously promoting Open technologies, they why is it being so cozy with Flash and Adobe? Is it probably because Apple does not support Flash? When Google does something new, they do it with a bang, but this time they are going to do something unexpected. Google has stated that they are trying to give users search results before they even know what they want. How is this even remotely possible? Are they turning psychic?

Marissa Mayer, vice president of location services said that the company is working on providing its users with results without having to search. The idea, as she said, was to push information to people. With the location in context, they can look at where users have been going on the web, with the help of the browser and a toolbar. This is a huge UI challenge that they strive to achieve.

While on a PC, the search results might come up on the browser’s panel, which complements the user’s own Web browsing. For mobiles, the information provided would be based on the user’s location.

The search results would be entirely based on the location of where the user is right then. They will figure out where the next most appropriate information is. Like in a book store, it might be the name of a book.

If Google is able to crack this new innovation, it would be a major shift. Though it does sound like science fiction to depend on technology to help search things that you don’t even know, yet we can welcome it as a move towards the future.
